The Genus Antigonon
Family Polygonaceae

This is a small genus of vines from tropical America. One species is cultivated around the world for its showy flowers.

The Polygonaceae is a medium-sized family that ranges throughout the world. They may be herbaceous plants, shrubs or trees. Useful garden plants include buckwheat (Fagopyrum,) and rhubarb (Rheum.) The sea grape (Cocoloba,) native to the warmer parts of Florida, is also a member of this family.

coral vine

This is a twining, evergreen vine with showy spikes of white, pink, to nearly red flowers. It is on the exotic pest plant list for Florida and is not recommended for cultivation in that state. It may not be as aggressive in the northern part of its range but I have observed volunteer seedlings under parent plants in northern zone 9a.
